- The Power Macintosh G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003) was Released on June 23, 2003, alongside the new Power Macintosh G5. It replaced the six month old Power Mac G4 (FireWire 800) that came before it. Unlike its successor, the Power Macintosh G4 (MDD 2003) lacked a G5 processor, aluminum enclosure and USB 2.0.
- The January 2003 Power Mac G4 was the first to require OS X. It was also the first with FireWire 800 ports. A good rule of thumb: If it has FireWire 800, it isn’t meant to boot OS 9, although we have heard of a workaround. The FireWire 800 model was also the first Power Mac with a Bluetooth.
The dual-867 MHz model shipped with 32 MB NVIDIA GeForce4 GX graphics card, had a 133 MHz system bus, used 266 MHz PC2100 DDR SDRAM, and shipped with a CD-RW/DVD-ROM drive. Announced in August 2002, The PowerMac G4 (Mirrored Drive Doors) included several motherboard enhancements borrowed from the previously released Xserve rackmount server.
The Apple Power Macintosh G4/1.25 DP (Firewire 800) features dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC 7455 (G4) processors each with the AltiVec 'Velocity Engine' vector processing unit, 256k 'on chip' level 2 cache, and 1 MB of DDR SRAM level 3 backside cache. It shipped configured with 256 MB of RAM, an 80 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive, a 12X DVD-ROM/CD-RW 'Combo' drive, and a 4X AGP ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM. AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth 1.1 were available by custom configuration.
The Power Macintosh G4 (Firewire 800) series is similar to the 'Mirrored Drive Doors' series that it replaced -- both share an identical case design complete with 'mirrored drive doors' and the same bus speeds (133 MHz or 167 MHz) and RAM (PC2100 and PC2700), for example -- but the 'Firewire 800' models have faster optical drives and add a single Firewire 800 port along with support for onboard AirPort Extreme (802.11g) and Bluetooth 1.1.
Perhaps most notably, however, is that the 'Mirrored Drive Doors' models are capable of booting in MacOS 9, whereas the 'Firewire 800' models are not.

The Apple Power Macintosh G4/1.25 (Mirrored Drive Doors 2003) features a single 1.25 GHz PowerPC 7455 (G4) processor with the AltiVec 'Velocity Engine' vector processing unit, 256k 'on chip' level 2 cache, and 1 MB of DDR SRAM level 3 backside cache. It shipped configured with 256 MB of RAM, an 80 GB Ultra ATA/100 hard drive, a 12X DVD-ROM/CD-RW 'Combo' drive, and a 4X AGP ATI Radeon 9000 Pro graphics card with 64 MB of DDR SDRAM. AirPort (802.11b) was available by custom configuration.
The Power Macintosh G4/1.25 (MDD 2003) is a re-released version of the Power Macintosh G4/1.25 DP (MDD) (M8573LL/A) -- due to demand from users who still needed to boot MacOS 9 -- but configured, by default, with a single processor, less RAM, a smaller hard drive, and a DVD-ROM/CD-RW 'Combo' drive instead of a DVD-R/CD-RW 'SuperDrive'. It also sold for a much lower price, US$1299 instead of US$3299.
It was released on June 23, 2003 along with the original Power Macintosh G5 models and discontinued on June 9, 2004 when the Power Macintosh G5 (June 2004) series was introduced.
Please note that this model also could be custom configured with dual 1.25 GHz PowerPC 7455 (G4) processors.
