I have a Hydra-Mac 8c with an Onan engine. The engine is getting weak and low on power. I have had the engine overhauled before but I guess I put more hours on it than I think I do. I really like this machine but I am not impressed with the Onan engine. I was thinking about repowering it with maybe a Honda or a Tecumsah and was wondering if anyone has done this before.

Try www.smallenginewarehouse.com they could come up with a conversion kit for you and they have decent prices on hondas .

Got to agree with Oldmax, a Honda is the way to go. I've been doing alot of work lately on alot of older Ditch-Witch cable plows that are Onan/Limamar powered. granted they are tough old engines but to rebuild one right now is around $700 plus any machine shop costs, labor, etc. I've had two customers recently with 'blown' engines and both have asked me to convert to the Honda which is what DW is using in all their new machines.

One a my buddys bought a Kubota diesel 'power unit' from a shop here that caters to commercial lawn outfits an land scapers. 2 cylinder 20 hp came complete with radiator, fan, an all as a unit. He put it in a little Case skid steer. Near $3000.00, but he's happy as a dead pig in the sunshine.

This is only a 20 hp engine and not much room in the engine compartment. I want to replace it with a new motor and not just cobble it up with a junkyard engine. If I could get it done fairly easily and around $1000-$1500 that is still cheaper than buying another skidloader. Also if it works I would think there would be a pretty good market for smaller rebuilt skidloaders.

Where I used to work in the early 80's they had a skidloader that broke the crankshaft on the Continental engine. This had happened more than once and they decided to do something else. Two guys from the maintenance department went to the Auto Boneyard with a tape measure. They came back with a Ford Pinto 1.6L four cylinder. This cost less than a reground crank for the Continental. It fit right in with some rebuilt motor mounts. The only problem was that it had no governor and was difficult to control. They solved that problem by getting a belt drive governor like they used to put on combines and swathers. Then it worked like a dream.

The 4 98 Ford industrial engine was used in many skid steers. It is basically a pinto engine ran at lower speed with a governor. I had a skid steer with one and thats what I was told. Probably a lot bigger than an Onan though. As long as the RPMs are the same and the drive for the pumps is lined up, you should be able to put a diifferent engine in. Be careful not to add too much extra power. It could cause major problems. Good luck. Dave

One big difference that I forgot to mention is that I believe the Onan is air cooled and the automotive engines are liquid cooled. Adding a radiator and the rest of the cooling system makes the job much more complicated. Maybe there is room, but maybe not.
