Panic Unison

Panic makes top-quality apps for developers, games for people who like fun, and, soon, a handheld gaming system. An adventure video game set in the Wyoming wilderness for Mac, PC, PlayStation 4 and Xbox One. Untitled Goose Game. Untitled Goose Game. It's a lovely morning in the village, and you are a horrible goose.

Panic -- makers of Transmit FTP client software and Audion digital music software -- have revealed their latest effort, Unison. Unison is a newsreader designed to enable Mac OS X users to view Usenet newsgroups.

Usenet newsgroups can contain everything from messages from different users to media content like music, photos or other files. Unison provides ways to use them all. It features live MP3 streaming, file grouping, image thumbnails, message threading, quick search features and many other capabilities.

Unison requires Mac OS X v10.2 or later, and can be downloaded from Panic's Web site now to try out for free. It costs US$24.95 to register.

Not all Internet Service Providers (ISPs) provide access to a Usenet newsfeed, so Panic is also offering Unison Usenet Access -- their own Usenet access, optimized for use with Unison. The service features 6+ months work of discussions and 15-65 days of binaries with no forced bandwidth limits. The service costs US$11.95 per month for up to 10GB of transfer. One month of Unison Usenet Access is also available in the $28.95 Unison Bundle. Visit Panic's Web site for details.

Unison Mac

Unison 2 is a major update for this popular Usenet client, providing a much more modern interface to access one of the oldest and most arcane corners of the Internet.

Download Unison

Fans of Usenet typically come in search of discussion groups and binary downloads, and Unison's all-new, iTunes-style interface makes navigation easy, with a friendly directory system, threaded messages, and an immensely useful search bar. And given that downloads are a priority for so many Usenet users, Unison also has some thoughtful integrated features, like audio preview, automatic unarchiving (with unRAR and unPAR), and automatic skipping of unneeded files. Unison hasn't gotten everything perfect yet (which is perhaps inevitable when venturing into the secret caves of Usenet). For example, you still can't toggle binaries as read. But some problems, such as the inability to import preferences, have been rectified quickly in early updates.

Many Usenet users may be happy staying with their current clients, but if you're new to Usenet or looking for a more elegant way to get around, Unison is a breath of fresh air. The seven-day trial version also offers a 24-hour trial of Unison Access, if you don't already have Usenet access through your ISP.
